Silicones for use in Automotive Applications
Applications for silicone materials within automotive continue to expand due to their versatile nature and physical properties. For example, they can remain elastic at high temperatures whilst retaining adhesion, provide protection from harsh environments, conduct unwanted heat away from components and impart gloss, shine and water repellence to aftermarket car care products.
They can be used under the bonnet, on the drive train, in the cabin and on the bodywork in both conventional and electric & hybrid vehicles of all types. Silicone product types include, adhesives, sealants, coatings, thermal transfer materials, potting compounds, gels, greases, liquid silicone rubber (LSR), antifoams, emulsions and silicone fluids. CHT have an extensive range of silicones and are always willing to develop others for your specific application if needed.
Silicone polymers and elastomers properties include:
- Excellent electrical properties
- Flexibility UV resistance
- Resistant to humidity and water
- Non-Toxic and inert
- Easy to use
- Good chemical resistance
- Wide temp range
- Flame retardancy
Silicones for use in Automotive Electronics
As automotive electronic applications continue to grow in number and complexity the demands made upon them for increased performance and reliability present many design challenges. By nature, the environmental conditions under which these units must work are very harsh. Temperatures under the bonnet are increasing and geographical locations can also produce extremes in the other direction - these extreme thermal cycles induce stress and the possibility of component failure.
Another source of mechanical stress is a direct result of vibration derived from the engine and road conditions. Chemical and oil attack are also common in and around the engine compartment, with water and humidity a constant threat. All these factors make component protection a high priority for any electronic design engineer working within the automotive industry.
Electronic applications include:
- Protective coatings for PCB’s
- Potting electronic components and sensors
- Sealing enclosures
- Thermal transfer materials
- Optical bonding for displays
- LEDs and headlamps
- Bonding and sealing of components
- Electric & hybrids vehicles

Silicone Sealants for Automotive
TThe sealing of the powertrain, water and fuel systems require strong, flexible, temperature and fuel resistant sealants. In many cases, traditional pre-cut gaskets have been replaced using FIPG (Formed in Place Gaskets) which offer overall cost reductions during the manufacturing process.
The CHT range of patented Acetone care adhesives are particularly well suited for this application.

Silicones for Electric Vehicles
Silicone chemistry is widely used within current automotive applications due to its inherent physical properties including, a wide operating temperature range, electrical insulation, high dielectric strength, low coefficient of thermal expansion and resistance to moisture and chemicals.
To help maximize the range of EVs, silicone foams can be used to reduce weight overall. These chemistries also feature flame retardant properties designed to mitigate a thermal runaway event.
Advances in Electric & Hybrid Vehicle design continue to reduce component size and increase power output, resulting in an ever-increasing demand for greater protection and better heat dissipation to maintain performance and life span. New filler technologies combined with formulating techniques enable CHT to increase thermal conductivity across a range of silicone materials including, adhesives, gap fillers, encapsulants, greases and gels.
For more information about our thermal transfer materials, download our CHT SILCOTHERM brochure. and CHT Silicone Foam brochure

Optical silicones for vehicle headlamps
High performance LEDs feature a complex optical system design. The smallest traces of impurities or UV-induced yellowing can dramatically affect the optical performance. CHT’s optically clear silicones feature non-yellowing catalyst systems and are UV-resistant with low outgassing to avoid any impurities on the lens.
